Acknowledgements

There is an acknowledgements section in the Preface of the book, but it is a static entity that had to be written long before much of the work had been done. This page gives us the opportunity to thank the many people who have helped, and who continue to help, improve the quality of the book and its supplemental materials.

Without the support of its publisher, a book cannot succeed. We appreciate the effort and resources that Addison-Wesley puts behind Java Software Solutions. We are proud to be associated with them. Please see the About the Publisher page on this site for more information and a detailed acknowledgement of the AW team that made the third edition a reality.

The reviewers of previous editions, as well as many other instructors, students, and friends, have shared their insight over the years. We appreciate it very much. We've compiled a list of these helpful folks, and hope we haven't missed anyone.

Our Special Thanks

The largest single influence on the third edition and supporting materials came from Robert Burton of Brigham Young University. He served as a technical reviewer, carefully analyzing every drop of the book as it came together. His feedback was invaluable. He also made the initial revisions to the Powerpoint slides to incorporate the third edition changes. He and his wife Lara Burton joined forces to produce the needed Programming Project solutions and all of the Exercise solutions. It is a pleaure to work with the Burtons. They put up with our unreasonable schedules and idiosyncrasies, all with a smile and a kind word. This really became a family affair when they got the help of Stephen Stubben (Lara's brother) to work out the formula for a complicated mortgage calculation needed for one of the programming projects. Steve is now in the doctoral program in accounting at Stanford.

The design and technical support of the web site for the third edition is the work of Villanova University student Chris Anton. We are constantly impressed by his drive, insight, and maturity. Chris is a very bright and personable young man -- a pleasure to know. He will be missed at Villanova when he graduates in May of 2003. Whomever he works for and with at that point will be fortunate.

Kevin Henry, now a Villanova alum, was a huge contributor to the technical support and content of the web site for the second edition of the book. Many of his influences live on in the third edition, and they are greatly appreciated.

The PaintBox project that is such an important part of Chapter 10 was developed by Pete DePasquale. He also developed the initial content of the class library reference appendix. Pete is now working on his doctorate at Virginia Tech. We look forward to working with him for many years to come.

The faculty in the Department of Computing Sciences at Villanova University regularly provide feedback on the textbook and have greatly influenced its evolution. They include Bob Beck, Paul Gormley (retired), Cathy Helwig, Dan Joyce, Najib Nadi, Mary-Angela Papalaskari, Beth Taddei, and Barbara Zimmerman.

We also want to thank the people who are making an ongoing effort to contribute to the content of this web site and the supplemental materials. We want this site to become an ever-evolving resource through which instructors can share their ideas with each other. In most cases, specific contributions are attributed where they occur.

We've dedicated this book to our families. They are the reason we do what we do. We regret the amount of time this project has taken us away from them, and appreciate their love and support more than they know.

To all, our sincere thanks.
