Java Software Solutions

Acknowledgements

There is an acknowledgements section in the Preface of the book, but it is a static entity and the evolution of the book and this web site never ends. This page gives us the opportunity to thank the many people who have helped, and who continue to help, improve the quality of the book and its supplemental materials.

Without the support of its publisher, a book cannot succeed. We appreciate the effort and resources that Addison-Wesley puts behind Java Software Solutions. We are proud to be associated with them. Michael Hirsch, in particular, is The Man. Please see the About the Publisher page on this site for more information and a detailed acknowledgement of the AW team that made the fourth edition a reality.

Our formal reviewers, as well as many other instructors, students, and friends, have shared their insight over the years. We appreciate it very much. We've compiled a list of these helpful folks, and hope we haven't missed anyone.

Special Thanks

Pete DePasquale is a wonderful friend and colleague. His help with this book has taken many forms throughout its various incarnations. He developed the original class library reference appendix, which is lauded by instructors as a great resource. He also developed the initial version of the PaintBox project. Now Pete has his own book, the Java Backpack Reference Guide, which can be bundled with Java Software Solutions. We look forward to working with Pete for many years to come, especially now that he's found a home close by at The College of New Jersey.

The Labs that supplement the book were developed by Adrienne Bloss and Jane Ingram at Roanoke College. Their focus on sound pedagogy and their attention to detail makes this resource stand out. It is greatly appreciated. The labs are available for download and can also be obtained in printed form.

We also appreciate the efforts of Barry Pollack from Sierra College, who developed the initial and revised test bank for the book. The test bank is available for download in text format, and is also available as part of Addison-Wesley's TestGen system.

Robert Burton
of Brigham Young University was a huge influence on the third edition of the book, and those effects carry through to the fourth edition as well. He served as a technical reviewer for both editions and his feedback was invaluable. He also made revisions to the presentation slides for the third edition. Furthermore, he and his wife Lara produced solutions for some programming projects and exercises as well.

The efforts and advice of Najib Nadi from Villanova University have been invaluable. Not only has he provided important feedback based on his use of the text in class, he also provides key technical support for the book's web site. Day in and day out, Najib is there with help, encouragement, and perceptive insight.

Villanova students, now alumni in many cases, have provided key support and feedback throughout this book's history. Of special note are Kevin Henry and Chris Anton, both bright and personable young men.

Above all, we've dedicated this book to our families. They are the reason we do what we do. We regret the amount of time this project has taken us away from them, and we appreciate their love and support more than they know.

To all, our sincere thanks.
